Is The Humble Toothbrush Obsolete?

dentist in Murray

Many of our tools for everyday living have become outmoded. Online search has replaced the paper phone book. Telephone answering machines have gone the way of manual typewriters. Even the iPod, which was hailed as the pinnacle of technology just a few years ago, is now gathering dust as people play music on their smart phones.

What about the ordinary toothbrush? Has something flashier and more advanced replaced it? Absolutely not!

“Wait a minute,” you might say, “isn’t an electric toothbrush better than a manual toothbrush? Actually, all toothbrushes, when used properly, are effective at removing food debris and plaque to keep your smile free of cavities.

When choosing which type of toothbrush to use, think about cost and convenience. Some people argue that even though electric toothbrushes are more pricey, you’ll save on dental bills. However, there are no definitive studies to back up this claim.

Manual toothbrushes are easy to find, whereas not all drugstores sell all brands of electric toothbrushes. It is frustrating to spend over a hundred dollars for a top-of-the-line electric toothbrush and then not be able to find a replacement head when necessary. People who travel may find that a smaller, manual toothbrush is easier to pack.

Whichever type of toothbrush you choose, you need to be careful about the pressure you put on your gums. Some family dentistry patients say that it’s difficult to know how much pressure they use with an electric toothbrush, while others say that because of the quick electrical movements, they tend to be more gentle on their gums. Regardless of the toothbrush brand, make sure you get soft bristles and replace it every three to four months.

Special consideration should be taken for men and women with arthritis. Some Murray area dentists recommend their elderly and arthritic patients to use electric toothbrushes when their manual dexterity is diminished. As for kids, once they are old enough, an electric toothbrush may be preferable, but safety should always be the first concern for Salt Lake City parents. In addition, Dr. Blackwood, your dentist in Salt Lake City, guides patients to only purchase dental products that carry the ADA seal.

When it comes to the toothbrush, old school is excellent for giving you a beautiful smile.

Do You Grind Your Teeth While You Sleep?

Murray dentist

Here is the Salt Lake Dental Care – Clint Blackwood DDS guide to treating teeth grinding.

Understand
Most teeth grinding will occur while sleeping. Consistent teeth grinding might be suspected with a sore jaw and dull headache in the mornings. Anxiety or stress are not the only reasons grinding may appear. It can also be related to an abnormal bite or missing or crooked teeth.

Visit Your Murray Dentist
Bruxism is a medical term used for grinding teeth. Bruxism can be identified by Dr. Clint Blackwood through an oral examination of jaw tenderness and abnormalities in the teeth. Discuss a possible nightguard for teeth grinding.

Get Control
When tooth grinding occurs, the fear is resulting oral damage and pain. Here at Salt Lake Dental Care – Clint Blackwood DDS we support oral health in many ways. Here are three things that may help:

  1. Control caffeine or alcohol intake as these may increase tooth grinding.
  2. Avoid gum and prohibit pen or pencil chewing. This benefits the jaw as it keeps the jaw from clenching repeatedly.
  3. Allow the jaw to relax; sometimes just setting your tongue between your teeth will help your jaw relax.

Every individual in our community from Salt Lake City to Murray deserves a good night’s sleep as well as a pain-free, headache-free morning.

Pregnancy And Oral Health In Murray

In today’s Salt Lake Dental Care blog we will discuss how pregnancy impacts your dental health. I am Dr. Clint Blackwood and I want all Utah expectant mothers to realize the importance of good oral hygiene during pregnancy. Because of the changes going on in a pregnant woman’s body there are potential dental health issues that may arise.

Many Murray women experience morning sickness accompanied with vomiting. The gastric acid increases the acidity in the mouth which can easily lead to enamel loss and tooth decay. Heightened levels of progesterone and estrogen may relax the ligaments that support the teeth causing them to loosen.

Most Murray residents have experienced gingivitis, but during pregnancy the hormonal changes increase your risk for gingivitis. Without proper dental care gingivitis can lead to gum disease.

If you are a pregnant Utah woman my staff and I at Salt Lake Dental Care recommend using a soft bristled toothbrush for daily brushing. Floss carefully and rinse your mouth with a fluoride wash. If you experience morning sickness, clean your mouth with a baking soda and water mixture.

If you are planning to become pregnant, it is a good idea to have a cleaning and exam prior to your pregnancy. If you need any dental procedures, it is a good idea to get them done as soon as possible. If you experience any dental problems during your pregnancy please call and schedule an appointment at 801-938-8855. Untreated dental disease can effect your overall health.

At Salt Lake Dental Care we not only offer excellent dental care to our pregnant clients, we provide quality preventative care and wisdom teeth removal for the entire family. Our Murray patients can expect professional general dentistry, cosmetic dentistry, and cosmetic dentistry.

Water Fluoridation In Utah Prevents Tooth Decay

Utah Family Dentists Recommend Flouride To Prevent Tooth Decay

Hello! Welcome to our Murray family dentistry blog. Today’s message from Salt Lake Dental Care concerns fluoride and Utah children’s dental health. I’m Clint Blackwood and I have been practicing dentistry in Murray since 2005.

When I examine a new Murray patient for the first time, I can usually tell whether the person drank fluoride-adjusted municipal water while growing up. Generally, their teeth are healthier than Salt Lake City people who had lower fluoride levels in their tap water.

Ideally, adequate fluoride intake combined with proper oral hygiene, good nutrition, and regular dental visits keep teeth healthy and free of decay. However, fluoride also helps teeth remineralize if acids have already compromised the enamel. For decay prevention and tooth strengthening, adequate fluoride is indispensable.

If you have children and your Utah municipal water supply does not have the recommended level of fluoride, you may want to consider giving your kids a fluoride supplement. The fluoride will strengthen the primary teeth that have already erupted and also the adult teeth that are forming.

The American Dental Association supports water fluoridation:

‘More than 65 years ago, on January 25, 1945, Grand Rapids, Michigan became the world’s first city to adjust the level of fluoride in its water supply. Since that time, fluoridation has dramatically improved the oral health of tens of millions of Americans. Community water fluoridation is the single most effective public health measure to prevent tooth decay.’ http://www.ada.org/fluoride.aspx

At Salt Lake Dental Care, we provide exceptional dental care for all members of the family including general and cosmetic dentistry. We serve the Sandy , Salt Lake City, and Murray UT areas. Ask us about teeth whitening, veneers, crowns, and short-term braces.

If you are interested in children’s fluoride supplements, call Salt Lake Dental Care at 801-938-8855 to schedule a pediatric dental evaluation.

Salt Lake Dental Care Sealants Prevent Cavities For Murray Kids

Salt Lake City Family Dentist Your child’s first dental exam at Salt Lake Dental Care should occur when the first teeth are in, usually between six months and one year of age. During your child’s first check up at our Murray office, we will tell you about sealants, a clear layer of plastic applied to the grooved surfaces of the teeth.

Sealants protect the teeth and prevent cavities by filling in the crevasses where food particles can get caught. They are especially effective in the back teeth where most cavities are found.

The application process takes only one short visit at Salt Lake Dental Care. The teeth are cleaned, dried, and then liquid sealant is applied to teeth and hardened: it’s quick and painless. Your child will be able to eat right after the appointment.

Sealants are covered by most Utah dental insurance plans. For Salt Lake City parents who pay out-of-pocket, sealants are still cost-effective considering the cavities and future visits that can be avoided. Some Utah dental insurance plans have age limitations for sealants. Check your policy if you are unsure of the qualifications. Salt Lake Dental Care recommends having sealants applied as early as possible.

If properly cared for, Salt Lake Dental Care sealants can last for many years, protecting your child during the most cavity-prone ages.

Diligent oral hygiene and refraining from biting into hard objects will help the sealants last longer. Clint Blackwood will check the sealants during routine dental visits and recommend re-application or repair if necessary.

Sealants, brushing and flossing, a balanced diet, and twice-yearly Salt Lake Dental Care dental visits are essential for pediatric dental health. For more information about sealants, contact Salt Lake Dental Care today.

Healthy Smiles For Murray UT Kids

Family Dentistry For Murray UT Kids

Hello Utah! Today’s Salt Lake Dental Care blog is for new Murray UT, Salt Lake City, and Sandy UT area parents. We know that your child’s health and safety is your top priority. That’s why you baby-proof your home, serve healthy foods, and buckle them tightly in their car seat before you pull out of your driveway.

I’m Dr. Clint Blackwood. I want to remind Murray UT parents that oral health is an intrinsic component of overall health. Teeth and gum condition can affect speech development, nutrition, and self-confidence. From birth, there are important things parents can do to promote healthy teeth – even before your son’s or daughter’s first tooth erupts.

At Salt Lake Dental Care, we maintain a kid-friendly environment so our youngest patients look forward to family dentistry check-ups and never develop the fear of dentists that was more common in generations past. I love working with you and your child to ensure a healthy smile for life and I can assure you that my high-quality staff will help your child have a positive experience.

We recommend bringing your child in for a first exam before age one, or when their first tooth erupts. During the visit, we can discuss pediatric dental issues such as fluoride treatments, brushing and flossing techniques, clear braces, and dental sealants. Dental sealants are composed of a plastic material that is applied to children’s teeth. The sealants bond to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth, mainly in the pits and fissures and protects the enamel against acids and plaque.

Murray UT children’s dentists also advise parents about pacifier use, thumb-sucking and other habits that can affect your child’s tooth development and oral health. Remember to call us immediately at 801-938-8855 if your child (or any member of your family) experiences a tooth injury or dental emergency.

Salt Lake Dental Care Guide To Healthy Tooth Enamel

Dental Health Tips From Your Sandy Utah Cosmetic Dentist

Here at Salt Lake Dental Care, we want your teeth to last a lifetime! Tooth enamel is one of the hardest parts of the body, but it is non-renewable so it is important not to not neglect or abuse our teeth. Daily teeth and gum care is the best way to protect tooth enamel.

Even though every Sandy Utah drug store carries hard bristle brushes, we recommend brushing with a soft brush after every meal to gently brush away acid. Scrub too hard, and you can erode enamel. It is ideal to brush immediately after eating, but brushing within 60 minutes of a meal has benefits. The quicker you remove food from your teeth, the better it is for your enamel.

Flossing regularly is also important to keep gums healthy. Whether the food is on tooth surfaces, or hidden in between, it is not doing your enamel any good.

Dr. Clint Blackwood recommends a checkup and thorough cleaning every six months. Our skilled family dentistry hygienists remove tartar, a substance that attracts plaque to the surface of the teeth and can weaken the teeth’s structures. Regular checkups prevent problems and save you money on more expensive restorations, such as dental implants, down the road.

Remember: don’t use your teeth for opening packages! Keep scissors and bottle openers handy. At Salt Lake Dental Care, we see damaged teeth and dental work as a result of patients using their teeth as tools. Biting down on something too hard, like ice or hard candy can also damage enamel.

Attention Murray UT, Salt Lake City, and Sandy Utah athletes: be sure to use a mouthguard for team, contact, and recreational sports.

Teeth grinding is also a common dental threat. Be careful not to grind teeth, this can not only wear away enamel but also pave ways for cavities to get in. If you grind your teeth while you are sleeping, make an appointment to be fitted for a night guard. Your enamel will thank you.

Lastly, remember: drink water. Coffee, sports drinks, soda, wine, and tea all contain a lot of acid or sugar, and in some cases both. Cut back, or at least use a straw. These drinks cause a lot of tooth decay for non-water drinkers in the Salt Lake City area.

We hope you find these Salt Lake Dental Care tips helpful. For more information on dental care, or to schedule an appointment, contact our cosmetic dentistry office today at 801-938-8855!
