An Air-dried Toothbrush Is A Healthy Toothbrush

An Air-dried Toothbrush Is A Healthy Toothbrush Salt Lake City

Today in our dental blog we will highlight some of the simple things you can do with your toothbrush to keep your mouth as clean and healthy as possible.

One of the most important habits Salt Lake City residents can form is to always allow their toothbrush to completely air dry between uses. The best way to let the toothbrush air dry is by placing it in a toothbrush holder on the counter with the bristles pointing up. This method of storage is much better than sticking it away in a drawer since it will take longer to dry in there.

Also, when you travel away from the Sandy, Taylorsville, or Draper area, make sure your toothbrush is dry before you seal it away in a travel container.

A good strategy for Murray residents to make sure their toothbrush has ample time to dry is to buy two toothbrushes at your Salt Lake City drugstore. Then alternate between the two so each has time to fully dry out between uses.

And Salt Lake City dental patients should remember to replace their toothbrush (or toothbrushes) every 3-4 months, or sooner if they’ve had a cold!

Hi. I’m Dr. Clint Blackwood, a dentist in Murray. I want my patients to have the best oral health possible. At Salt Lake Dental Care – Clint Blackwood DDS we offer the following services:

wisdom teeth removal
Invisalign
sedation dentistry
porcelain veneers

We are currently accepting new Salt Lake City patients and the high-quality staff here would be happy to answer any questions you have about teeth whitening, veneers, bonding, or other cosmetic dentistry procedures.

No Cavities? Thank Your Parents

how to prevent cavities Murray

At Salt Lake Dental Care – Clint Blackwood DDS, we stay abreast of new discoveries in the exciting field of dentistry and occasionally share interesting facts with our patients. Today’s post focuses on new findings in a captivating field of research: genetic dentistry.

“About 60% of the risk for tooth decay appears to be due to genetic factors.” Mary L. Marazita, director of the Center for Craniofacial and Dental Genetics at the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine.1

Whoa! Did she say 60%? That’s huge. You might be thinking: “That’s why I brush and floss but still get cavities.” Or, better yet, you might be thinking, “No wonder I have never had a cavity but eat candy often and occasionally go to bed without brushing.”

A recent article on CNN.com highlights tooth decay risk factors that have a genetic link1:

Enamel Strength
Your genes play a critical role in the composition of your tooth enamel. Soft enamel is more cavity prone.

Sugar Cravings
Whether or not you love sugar has a genetic basis. Now you can blame your parents if you pop M&Ms all day. (But it still isn’t good for your teeth or waistline!)

Chemical Composition of Saliva

Your saliva can protect against cavities – if it properly metabolizes important minerals and vitamins like calcium, potassium, iron, and Vitamin C. Your genes influence your saliva’s power to prevent decay.

Immune Response to Bacteria
We don’t like to think about the dangerous bacteria in our mouth but, hopefully, our immune system is ever-vigilant at fighting their constant attempts to cause decay and gum disease. The strength of your immune system is determined, in part, by genetics.

In the next few decades, scientists in the emerging specialty of genetic dentistry may play a key role in the development of new cavity prevention techniques.

The purpose of this article is not to encourage Salt Lake Dental Care – Clint Blackwood DDS patients to be lax about oral hygiene if their parents have strong teeth. Nor to cause those whose teeth decay easily to throw their hands up in despair and resign themselves to a toothless mouth.

Proper oral hygiene is critical for all of us, regardless of our genetic predisposition to tooth decay. You have the power to be passionate about your oral health, regardless of the genes you inherited. Whether you have frequent dental check-ups, consistent fluoride intake, effective brushing and flossing techniques, and proper nutrition, is up to you.

If you need a thorough dental exam, an expert dental cleaning, a refresher course on proper brushing and flossing, or want to improve your smile with industry-leading cosmetic dentistry, call Salt Lake Dental Care – Clint Blackwood DDS at 801-506-6009 to schedule a consultation.

We offer the following services:

wisdom teeth removal
Invisalign
sedation dentistry
porcelain veneers

Cavity Fighting Chewing Gum?

Salt Lake City Oral Dentistry I’m Clint Blackwood DDS of Salt Lake Dental Care – Clint Blackwood DDS in Murray. My patients often ask me if chewing xylitol gum is an effective substitute for tooth brushing and regular dental exams.

Before I answer that question, let me tell you a little bit about xylitol:

Xylitol is a natural sweetener that was first discovered in birch tree bark but is also found in many fruits and vegetables. Unlike most other sweeteners (natural or synthetic), xylitol is actually useful for your teeth.

Numerous clinical studies have shown that xylitol inhibits the growth of the bacteria that initiates dental caries. It also helps alleviate plaque and strengthens tooth enamel.

Xylitol has other benefits, as well. Because it is low on the glycemic index, many of my patients with diabetes enjoy it as a healthy alternative to sugar. For my patients that live with frequent dry mouth, I recommend xylitol gum or mints to stimulate saliva production while protecting against dental caries.

Now, back to the golden question. Is xylitol gum just as effective as brushing your teeth and seeing your family dentist regularly? Absolutely not! If you cannot brush your teeth after a meal, chewing xylitol gum for five or ten minutes is probably a good idea. However, you should still brush your teeth thoroughly (with a soft brush) after meals and get twice-yearly exams and dental cleanings.

At Salt Lake Dental Care – Clint Blackwood DDS, our goal is to keep your smile healthy and beautiful for life by preventing dental issues before they start. If you postpone dental visits until you feel pain, you risk losing teeth and most certainly will require more extensive treatment than if the issue was caught earlier.

Is it time for a dental exam? Call us at 801-506-6009 to book an appointment. Our high-quality team is waiting to take care of all your dental needs.

Why You Should Fix Your Child’s Crooked Teeth

orthodontics Murray

Murray parents want what’s best for their kids, but some can’t always provide everything their children need when the family budget is tight. If your child has crooked teeth and you are on the fence about braces, we encourage you to read this post.

1. A beautiful smile with straight teeth boosts your child’s self-esteem.

Young children with crooked teeth may not notice that anything is wrong, but eventually they will realize that their teeth don’t look right. Straight teeth make the whole face more pleasing and attractive. If your child is self-conscious about an unsightly smile, he or she will be reluctant to smile. A serious demeanor could impact the way he or she is treated by peers.

2. Crooked teeth can affect the bite.

If you suspect that your child’s bite is not aligned, we invite you to make an appointment with Salt Lake Dental Care – Clint Blackwood DDS. Dr. Clint Blackwood can evaluate your child’s bite and make recommendations to see a specialist if necessary.

3. Crooked teeth can impact normal speech development.

4. Correcting a child’s teeth with orthodontia is faster and easier when the jaw is young and flexible.

5. Crooked teeth can reduce your child’s power to eat a healthy diet.

Misaligned teeth can make chewing and eating difficult. Children need a variety of foods but may miss out on important nutrients if they can’t chew raw vegetables or meat, for example. If your child only eats soft foods, his/her jaw may not develop normal size and strength.

6. Misaligned teeth can damage the gums and underlying bone.

7. If crooked teeth cause malocclusion (bad bite), issues with TMD (Temporomandibular Disorders) can result.

TMD is a detrimental condition affecting the jaw joint.

8. It’s easier to clean teeth when they are straight and uncrowded.

When uneven teeth begin to crowd together, it becomes difficult to make critical daily cleanings effective. And, when your teeth aren’t cleaned properly, troubles with plaque build-up, cavities, and gum disease generally result.

9. If the child’s crooked teeth are not corrected while they are young, the problems may compound and become worse with age.

Severely crooked teeth typically affect energy and quality of life. For example, chewing issues can lead to ulcers, and gum disease increases the risk of stroke and heart disease.

10. There are many new types of braces.

Ceramic, self-ligating, and lingual (invisible) braces are some of the new orthodontia options. In some circumstances, invisible braces can be just as effective at aligning teeth as the traditional type.

To find out if your child needs braces, schedule a consultation at Salt Lake Dental Care – Clint Blackwood DDS by calling 801-506-6009.

Dental Sealants – Another Tool For Cavity Prevention In Sandy

Dental Sealants - Another Tool For Cavity Prevention In Sandy

Dental patients in the Sandy, Taylorsville, and Draper areas know that regular brushing and flossing are essential for optimal oral health. However, the bristles of your toothbrush can’t reach into every small groove and depression in your teeth, especially the really bumpy back teeth. That’s where sealants can be invaluable.

Dental sealants are a plastic material that is applied by your Salt Lake City dentist. This material is a resin that bonds to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth, mainly in the pits and fissures. The plastic acts as a shield against acids and plaque that can damage the enamel.

Many Murray residents might think that sealants are only for children and teenagers, but they can actually be beneficial for adults as well. If you are wondering if sealants are right for you, speak with your Sandy, Taylorsville, or Murray dentist. This simple dental procedure can improve your oral health by protecting the surfaces that are particularly vulnerable to decay.

Many Utah dental insurance providers include dental sealants as a covered benefit, so check with your provider if you are considering them. If you don’t have dental insurance, ask us about financing options. Because they can prevent cavities, dental sealants can save you money in the long run.

I’m Dr. Clint Blackwood, an experienced Murray dentist. Thank you for visiting my dental blog. At our office we serve the Salt Lake City area by offering:

Wisdom teeth removal
Invisalign
Sedation dentistry
Porcelain veneers
Teeth whitening

If you have any questions about these or other cosmetic dental procedures, call us today at 801-506-6009 to schedule a consultation.  Our high-quality staff would be happy to assist you.
