Avoid Sports Dental Emergencies: Protect Those Teeth!

sports dentistry Murray

It is estimated that over 5 million teeth are knocked out yearly and a significant portion of these dental traumas occur on the playing field or court. Each dislodged tooth requires several trips to the dentist and hundreds of dollars in restoration expenses. Not to mention pain!

I’m Dr. Clint Blackwood of Salt Lake Dental Care and I want to raise awareness of the importance of athletic mouth protection. I advise my patients to think of mouthguards as an important part of their protective gear. Most Murray parents require their children to wear helmets when biking and shinguards while playing soccer. I encourage parents to emphasize the importance of mouth protection from your child’s very first 5 year-old T-ball game. And we all need to practice what we preach.

You are probably aware of the main types of mouthguards: ready-to-wear, boil and bite, and custom-fitted. The stock mouth protectors are pre-formed but are definitely not one-size-fits all and probably provide the least amount of protection. (Though they are better than nothing.)

You can find boil and bite mouth protectors at Murray sporting goods stores. They are to be softened in water and then formed to the mouth (follow the manufacturer’s instructions).

Some Murray dentists offer custom sports mouthguards that provide the highest level of protection and comfort. Mouth protectors that are comfortable are more likely to be worn by kids who complain about wearing a mouthguard. Ask your dentist about custom mouthguards.

Mouth protection is extremely vital for Murray patients with braces or fixed bridge work. Some Murray orthodontists recommend mouth protectors for lower teeth as well.

If you or your child has a sports-related dental emergency, call my Murray office immediately at 801-938-8855. I will do everything in my power to save the tooth but every second counts. Make sure you save all pieces of the tooth and bring them with you.

Soft, Medium, or Buzz Lightyear?

Affordable Dentistry in Murray At Salt Lake Dental Care, Dr. Clint Blackwood is often asked how to choose the most basic tool of oral hygiene, the toothbrush. Picking a toothbrush in Murray can be as difficult as choosing a paint color, and there seem to be just as many choices.

If you have visited the dental section of your local Sandy grocery store lately, you know what I am talking about. There are brushes with bristles of varying lengths, brushes that massage your gums, and brushes that change color when they are used up. (If I had to rate them purely on their fun factor, I would choose the Spiderman brush.)

Some toothbrush manufacturers claim their brushes freshen your breath or remove stains from your teeth. How do you choose?

One key factor is the firmness of the bristles. Hard bristles may be more effective for cleaning burnt steak off a grill or hard water deposits off a shower floor. However, this does not hold true for your teeth. Medium and firm brushes can damage your gums. Soft and extra-soft bristles are plenty stiff enough to clean plaque, food particles, and surface stains from your teeth. Soft bristles also offer more flexibility for hard-to-reach nooks and crannies.

After having dental work or oral surgery in Salt Lake City, especially anything involving soft tissue grafts, make sure you use an extra-soft brush and be careful!

When buying a toothbrush for a child in Taylorsville, make sure the brush feels comfortable in his or her hand. If the size and angle feels awkward, the child will be less likely to use it long enough to clean all areas of the mouth. Children do not necessarily need a child-sized tooth brush. Some Salt Lake City kids can manage an adult size brush better than a short, narrow child size brush. If you are unsure, ask your Murray dentist at Salt Lake Dental Care.

What about the electric types and water-shooters? Some Murray residents like the feeling of vibrating bristles or a mini-squirt gun blasting away at the plaque. Salt Lake City people with arthritis or other movement-inhibiting conditions can benefit from powered brushes which take some strain off hands and arm muscles.

Is your toothbrush doing the job? Schedule an exam with your Murray dentist at Salt Lake Dental Care and find out.

At Salt Lake Dental Care, our high-quality dental hygienists instruct our Murray pediatric patients and Salt Lake City adult patients on proper brushing and flossing. If you haven’t experienced a dental deep cleaning at Salt Lake Dental Care, you don’t know how clean your teeth and gums can feel.

Schedule a thorough dental cleaning today by calling Salt Lake Dental Care at 801-938-8855. An outstanding feature of Salt Lake Dental Care is our commitment to excellence. We offer cosmetic dentistry and a full spectrum of restorative dental procedures.

Saliva And Murray’s Dental Health

Saliva And Murray

Hi. I’m Dr. Clint Blackwood. Welcome to my Murray dental blog. Today we’ll be looking at the complexity and importance of your saliva. Though most people in the Sandy, Taylorsville, or Draper areas may think it’s gross, saliva is essential to dental health as well as digestion.

Saliva is mostly water, but a small portion of it is made up of enzymes, antibacterial substances, mucus, and minerals. The pH balance of the mouth is maintained by saliva, and pH balance is a key factor in the development of cavities and other forms of tooth decay.

The minerals in saliva help to maintain the enamel surface of the teeth. Immunoproteins in saliva inhibit the overgrowth of microbes in the mouth, thereby protecting the gums from gingivitis.

Now that Salt Lake City residents know how important saliva is to dental health, I’m sure you can see why ample salivary flow should concern you. For most of my Murray patients, everyday chewing is enough to stimulate salivary glands to release saliva. However, dry mouth, also known as xerostomia, is an ailment that should be dealt with quickly before oral health complications occur.

If you are in the Sandy, Taylorsville, or Draper area and are looking for quality dental care, please contact my office today at 801-938-8855. We have been providing general and cosmetic dentistry in Murray since 2005.

Our high-quality staff would be happy to talk to you about wisdom teeth removal, Invisalign, sedation dentistry, porcelain veneers, and the other services we provide to our valued patients.

Keep Your Teeth Safe In Murray

Keep Your Teeth Safe, Murray

Hopefully you are one of many health-conscious Murray residents who are finding ways to get outside or to the gym and get moving. There has been an explosion in the variety of activities offered by personal trainers, all-purpose Murray gyms, specialty facilities, and Utah recreation departments in recent years.

With all these exciting ways to exercise becoming commonplace, people in the Sandy, Taylorsville, and Draper areas may not be aware of the tooth risks associated with them.

I’m Dr. Clint Blackwood, a concerned Murray dentist and fitness enthusiast, and I want to talk to you today about mouth protectors.

You might think that mouth protectors are only for ultimate fighters and football players, but actually mouth guards can and should be used during any activity where a blow to the face is possible.

This includes many common sports such as pick-up basketball games, and volleyball, and bicycling. When you have a properly fitted mouth protector, you can prevent broken or lost teeth as well as lip, tongue, and jaw injuries.

Mouth protectors come in three main types: stock, boil and bite, and custom-fitted. The stock mouth protectors are pre-formed and ready to wear. Unfortunately, they rarely fit well. You can find boil and bite mouth protectors at sporting goods stores in the Salt Lake City area. They are to be softened in water and then formed to your mouth (make sure you follow the manufacturer’s instructions). Custom-fitted mouth protectors can be made by your Murray dentist to make sure you have a perfect fit.

The soft tissues that line your cheeks and lips are especially susceptible to injury when you have braces or fixed bridge work, not to mention the damage that can be caused to the orthodontic appliances themselves. For these reasons, a mouth protector is extremely important for Salt Lake City patients undergoing these treatments. Your Murray orthodontist may even suggest a mouth protector for your lower teeth as well.

If you have questions about sports dentistry in Murray or any other dental issues, please contact my office and schedule an appointment. I look forward to meeting you.

Why Is Dry Mouth Dangerous For Murray Dental Patients?

Why Is Dry Mouth Dangerous For Murray Dental Patients?Hello, welcome to the Salt Lake Dental Care blog. Today we are going to talk about dry mouth, an unpleasant condition that can actually endanger the oral health of Murray Salt Lake Dental Care dentistry patients.

Reduction of saliva flow resulting in a dry mouth is a more common problem among older Murray adults; however, people of all ages in the Salt Lake City area may experience the symptoms of dry mouth at one time or another. These symptoms include a dry, red tongue, difficulty swallowing, and persistent sore throat.

Sometimes dry mouth in Murray dental patients is caused by a disease or infection, but a more frequent cause of dry mouth for patients in Salt Lake City is prescription medications.

Decongestants, blood pressure medications, antidepressants, and painkillers (all used extensively in Murray) are just some of the drugs that list ‘dry mouth’ as a common side effect.

It is common for allergy-prone Salt Lake Dental Care dental patients to complain of dry mouth when they start taking antihistamines during the Salt Lake City hay fever season.

Aside from being an uncomfortable nuisance, untreated dry mouth can cause tooth damage for Murray dental patients. Adequate saliva is necessary to keep the mouth lubricated, wash the food from teeth, and neutralize the acidic environment caused by plaque. Extensive tooth decay can occur in the absence of saliva for Salt Lake City dental patients with chronic dry mouth.

If you are unsure of the cause of your dry mouth, or if you are looking for dry mouth treatments, call Salt Lake Dental Care to schedule an appointment with Dr. Clint Blackwood.

When you visit Salt Lake Dental Care in Murray, please be sure to bring a list of medications you are taking so Dr. Clint Blackwood can give you an accurate diagnosis.

Dental Sealants – Another Tool For Cavity Prevention In Sandy

Dental Sealants - Another Tool For Cavity Prevention In Sandy

Dental patients in the Sandy, Taylorsville, and Draper areas know that regular brushing and flossing are essential for optimal oral health. However, the bristles of your toothbrush can’t reach into every small groove and depression in your teeth, especially the really bumpy back teeth. That’s where sealants can be invaluable.

Dental sealants are a plastic material that is applied by your Salt Lake City dentist. This material is a resin that bonds to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth, mainly in the pits and fissures. The plastic acts as a shield against acids and plaque that can damage the enamel.

Many Murray residents might think that sealants are only for children and teenagers, but they can actually be beneficial for adults as well. If you are wondering if sealants are right for you, speak with your Sandy, Taylorsville, or Murray dentist. This simple dental procedure can improve your oral health by protecting the surfaces that are particularly vulnerable to decay.

Many Utah dental insurance providers include dental sealants as a covered benefit, so check with your provider if you are considering them. If you don’t have dental insurance, ask us about financing options. Because they can prevent cavities, dental sealants can save you money in the long run.

I’m Dr. Clint Blackwood, an experienced Murray dentist. Thank you for visiting my dental blog. At our office we serve the Salt Lake City area by offering:

Wisdom teeth removal
Invisalign
Sedation dentistry
Porcelain veneers
Teeth whitening

If you have any questions about these or other cosmetic dental procedures, call us today at 801-938-8855 to schedule a consultation.  Our high-quality staff would be happy to assist you.

Why Do Murray Dentists Like Potatoes?

Murray teeth bleaching best price

The reason dentists like potatoes is because they are so “filling!” Ba-dum ching.

Lame joke, I know. But seriously, the wiser our patients in Draper and Sandy are about what they eat, the easier it will be to care for their dear old teeth.

https://www.saltlakedentalcare.com/meet-dr-blackwood/

It doesn’t have to be potatoes, but the mouth does request that we take a good look at what can be damaging and upsetting it.

The Sugar Problem
Sugars get converted by bacteria in the mouth to acids, which attack enamel on teeth and get the decay process started for Draper people of all ages. Fruits have a high water content which can dilute the effects of the sugars they contain and get the saliva flowing, so they aren’t really no-nos. It’s the chocolate bars, hard candies, cookies, cakes, and pies that you should steer clear of.

Acidic Food Coupling
Oranges, tomatoes, lemons, and the like should be eaten as part of a meal to minimize their acidic effects. Sandy folks are wise to eat a variety of healthy foods such as cheeses, chicken and other meats, nuts, and milk. The calcium and phosphorus in these foods will support tooth remineralization.

Timing of Meals
The more often you eat, the more often your teeth are subject to the decay process. This can be tempered by choosing healthy snacks. And keep in mind, the later at night you eat the more likely you are not only to eat unhealthy foods, but to skip oral hygiene altogether.

I hope this blog assists in keeping you on the path to a healthy mouth and gives you something to think about if you’re interested in oral health in Salt Lake City or Murray, Utah.

I’m Clint Blackwood DDS at Salt Lake Dental Care. If cosmetic dentistry like porcelain veneers, dental implants, and teeth whitening interests you, call 801-938-8855 to set up a consultation. We can discuss anything from general dentistry to dental crowns and bridges. Our high-quality staff is ready to make you comfortable and informed.

We can offer our friends from Sandy sedation dentistry or teeth whitening if they want it. We can schedule patients from Draper for wisdom teeth removal or porcelain veneers right here in our office. Murray customers are always welcome to check into Invisalign clear braces, too. Don’t hesitate to make the call.
