10 Terrific Tooth Tips From Salt Lake Dental Care

10 Terrific Tooth Tips From Salt Lake Dental Care

1. If you have kids and your municipal water supply does not have the recommended level of fluoride, talk to your pediatrician about fluoride supplements. Fluoride strengthens both the teeth you can see and the ones still forming in the jaw.
2. Set a timer when you brush to make sure you spend at least two minutes thoroughly (but gently!) cleaning all surfaces. Don’t forget your tongue – it provides a cozy home for bacteria to flourish.
3. Floss before you brush so that tooth bristles can better reach between teeth.
4. If you can’t brush after a meal, chew some sugarless gum with xylitol. Xylitol may curb the growth of bacteria on your teeth to reduce plaque formation.
5. Eat carbohydrates with meals instead of alone as snacks. More saliva is generated while eating a meal and this can lessen the effects of carbs sitting on your teeth.
6. An oral fluoride rinse used right before bedtime adds an extra measure of decay deterrence. Fluoride rinses (not traditional mouthwash) work best when swished over teeth for at least thirty seconds after flossing and brushing. After spitting it out, don’t rinse with water. Let the residue protect and strengthen your enamel all night long. This is especially important for kids – just make sure they don’t swallow it.
7. If you have diabetes, it is important to understand that unhealthy blood sugar levels can increase your risk of tooth decay and gum disease. Your dentist can help you maintain oral health in spite of your condition. If you have already experienced dental complications related to diabetes, schedule a consultation with Clint Blackwood by calling 801-938-8855.
8. Beware of the dental risks of chronic dry mouth (xerostomia). Continual saliva production is essential for keeping the mouth lubricated, washing the food from tooth surfaces, and neutralizing the acid caused by plaque. Decongestants, blood pressure medications, antidepressants, and painkillers are some of the medications that can cause dry mouth. Clint Blackwood can help you protect your teeth if you live with this unpleasant condition.
9. Wearing a mouthguard when you participate in sports can prevent tooth injury. Many Murray dentists offer custom mouthguards that fit perfectly.
10. If you are looking for an excellent dentist in the Murray area, we invite you to schedule an appointment with Dr. Clint Blackwood at Salt Lake Dental Care. At Salt Lake Dental Care, we provide gentle, quality care for children and adults. Talk to us about preventative, restorative, cosmetic, or children’s dentistry. We look forward to serving you.

Diet Changes For Healthier Teeth In Murray

Diet Changes For Healthier Teeth In Murray

Hello, I am Dr. Clint Blackwood of Salt Lake Dental Care in Murray. Today’s blog topic is ‘How Your Diet Affects Your Smile.’

I’m sure you brush and floss regularly and hopefully visit your Murray cosmetic dental practice for cleanings, but did you know that making small changes to your diet can improve your oral health?

Most Murray residents are aware that sugar found in candy, cookies, and sodas can harm your teeth, but some Salt Lake City people don’t realize that all carbohydrates can cause cavities. A handful of pretzels or a piece of pumpernickel bread can have the same effect on your teeth as a fudge brownie.

All carbohydrates break down into simple sugars, which are converted into plaque, which can then cause cavities and gum disease. Carbs are naturally sticky and adhere to your teeth. Eating carbs with meals is healthier than eating them as snacks because more saliva is generated at mealtime. Saliva helps prevent food particles from sticking to teeth.

At Salt Lake Dental Care, I continue to see tooth damage caused by sodas and sports drinks. If you choose to drink them, sip them through a straw. By limiting the contact of these drinks on your teeth, you will help preserve your enamel.

Another way Salt Lake City folks can improve their oral health is to get 800mg of calcium a day for men and 1,000mg for women under 50. Calcium helps strengthen your jaw and secure your teeth firmly in the jaw bone.

Diet alone will not prevent cavities and gum disease for Murray folks, however, a few changes in eating habits can help maintain healthy teeth and gums.

My staff and I at Salt Lake Dental Care are accepting new Murray general and cosmetic dental patients in the 84107 zip code area. I encourage you to call 801-938-8855 today to schedule an exam and cleaning.

Salt Lake Dental Care Tooth Tips For Traveling

If you live in the Salt Lake City area and are planning to take a vacation or business trip soon, I recommend you coordinate your dental care with your travel schedule. It’s always a good idea to have a checkup with your Salt Lake City dentist prior to leaving on long vacations, especially if your trip is taking you to developing areas without good dental care options. This quick checkup will help you be sure that your mouth is ready to travel.

More importantly, if you have any dental procedures scheduled before you leave, discuss it with your dentist. A large number of dental procedures are actually surgical procedures. This means that your body will need more time to heal than you may realize.

Also, if you’re traveling by plane, you should be aware that changes in the cabin pressure of the airplane may cause tooth pain or discomfort for patients who have just had oral surgery. In addition, make sure you are aware of any necessary follow-up appointments with your Salt Lake City dentist or orthodontist before you schedule a vacation.

I’m Dr. Clint Blackwood and I want Salt Lake City residents to be informed about their dental care. My Murray practice offers:

wisdom teeth removal
Invisalign

Pregnancy And Oral Health In Murray

In today’s Salt Lake Dental Care blog we will discuss how pregnancy impacts your dental health. I am Dr. Clint Blackwood and I want all Utah expectant mothers to realize the importance of good oral hygiene during pregnancy. Because of the changes going on in a pregnant woman’s body there are potential dental health issues that may arise.

Many Murray women experience morning sickness accompanied with vomiting. The gastric acid increases the acidity in the mouth which can easily lead to enamel loss and tooth decay. Heightened levels of progesterone and estrogen may relax the ligaments that support the teeth causing them to loosen.

Most Murray residents have experienced gingivitis, but during pregnancy the hormonal changes increase your risk for gingivitis. Without proper dental care gingivitis can lead to gum disease.

If you are a pregnant Utah woman my staff and I at Salt Lake Dental Care recommend using a soft bristled toothbrush for daily brushing. Floss carefully and rinse your mouth with a fluoride wash. If you experience morning sickness, clean your mouth with a baking soda and water mixture.

If you are planning to become pregnant, it is a good idea to have a cleaning and exam prior to your pregnancy. If you need any dental procedures, it is a good idea to get them done as soon as possible. If you experience any dental problems during your pregnancy please call and schedule an appointment at 801-938-8855. Untreated dental disease can effect your overall health.

At Salt Lake Dental Care we not only offer excellent dental care to our pregnant clients, we provide quality preventative care and wisdom teeth removal for the entire family. Our Murray patients can expect professional general dentistry, cosmetic dentistry, and cosmetic dentistry.

Time To Floss In Salt Lake City

Important Dental Health Habits For Salt Lake City Smiles

Many residents of the Murray UT, Salt Lake City, and Sandy area are finding that they just don’t have time to floss and that it’s difficult to fit it into their daily schedule. If you’ve found this to be true, here are some ideas for when to fit this important dental health habit into your day.

The most common time is right before bed, but make sure your aren’t too tired to do a good job.
Right when you wake up is also an option, but if food is left between teeth all night, it has a chance to turn into plaque.
Try just after lunch, but before you go back to work.
Floss while you are in the car sitting in traffic. It’s easier one-handed with the pre-strung floss pics. (You might get some strange looks from other drivers, but it’s worth it.)
After you exercise – keep some floss in your gym bag.
While you’re watching the nightly news.

I hope this gives you some ideas to help you make flossing part of your daily routine. Flossing is essential for anyone in Murray or Salt Lake City who wants to have a healthy smile.

If you want to improve your smile, look into cosmetic dentistry procedures such as porcelain veneers, invisible braces, teeth whitening or Murray UT dental implants.

My name is Dr. Clint Blackwood and I am a high-quality Murray dentist. Helping my dental patients establish good habits is important to me, as well as helping them achieve the smile they want with cosmetic dentistry procedures such as veneers, teeth whitening and complete smile makeovers.

We are currently accepting new patients, so give us a call at 801-938-8855 to make an appointment!
