Beware Of Hidden Sugar

preventative dentistry in Taylorsville We advise our Taylorsville dental patients at Salt Lake Dental Care to watch their sugar intake to prevent cavities and other health problems.

If you are trying to unsweeten your diet, you are probably skipping the usual suspects: candy, soda, and baked treats. But not all sugar is as obvious as the frosting on a piece of chocolate cake or the powdery stuff in a pixie stix.

Here are some foods found in Taylorsville grocery stores and Sandy school cafeterias with a surprisingly high sugar content:

  • Ketchup
  • Low fat versions of snack foods (Manufacturers often replace fat with sugar.)
  • Salad dressing
  • Breads, buns, rolls
  • Spaghetti sauce
  • Protein bars
  • Granola
  • Canned soup
  • Peanut butter
  • Yogurt
  • Fast food meals (Hamburgers, fries, sandwiches, and salads are often loaded with sugar, not to mention the dessert items.)
  • Antacids
  • Cough drops
  • Fruit smoothies (Even a small serving has a whopping amount of sugar.)

Reading the fine print on labels is a must. The following terms are all types of sugar:

raw sugar, cane sugar, glucose, lactose, galactose, fructose, dextrose, honey, sorghum, molasses, cane sugar, confectioner’s sugar, crystallized cane juice, invert sugar, maltodextrin (or dextrin), maple syrup, concentrated fruit juices, evaporated cane juice (what kind of cane do you think they are talking about?)

Do the math: when shopping at Taylorsville markets or health food stores, carefully decipher food labels before you buy. Four grams of sugar equals one teaspoon. Add up all the grams of every type of sugar listed and divide by four to truly understand how much sugar an item contains.

At Salt Lake Dental Care, we advocate and practice preventative care for lifelong dental health. For more information on how your diet affects your dental health, contact us at 801-938-8855. Going to the dentist for the first time in Murray, or if you have not been for while, can be an unsettling experience for both kids and adults. The very idea of a ‘dentist’ seems to hold negative connotation for many people. If you are an adult who is moving to the Murray area, or your child is preparing to visit the dentist for the first time, here are a few tips that may help ease you into regular dental checkups and put you on the path toward increased oral health and wellness.

Choose an Murray dentist who is appropriate for your needs. When you meet your new Murray dentist for the first time, make an effort to ask questions about the care you will receive. Ask questions that are relevant to your situation including questions about experience, age range of patients, and recommended procedures for any conditions you may have. Get to know your Murray dentist so you feel comfortable with the care you will receive.

Introduce yourself to your Murray dentist and get to know the office staff. Visiting the dentist in Murray will seem less of a chore when you feel you have trusted friends who are there to help.

Be prepared to provide your Murray dentist with information. Whether you are experiencing specific pain at that moment, or anticipating a problem, be sure to discuss everything with your dentist. Many patients become intimidated in the office environment and avoid expressing pain or discussing issues. As your dentist, I need to know everything you are experiencing and will be better prepared to help as you ask questions and express your concerns.

I understand that everyone is unique; what works for one person may not work for another. You know what works best for you, and the best way to have a good experience with a Murray dentist is to communicate. Let me know what you are experiencing so that I can make adjustments and help you feel more comfortable and secure.

At Salt Lake Dental Care our high-quality staff will work to make your dental experience a pleasant one. We know it can be frightening to visit the dentist for the first time, or after a long while. We’ll do what we can to make you feel comfortable, secure, and among caring friends.

If you are in Murray, Utah and are ready to visit the dentist again, give us a call at 801-938-8855, or stop by to meet us; we’re excited to meet you.

Diet Changes For Healthier Teeth In Murray

Diet Changes For Healthier Teeth In Murray

Hello, I am Dr. Clint Blackwood of Salt Lake Dental Care in Murray. Today’s blog topic is ‘How Your Diet Affects Your Smile.’

I’m sure you brush and floss regularly and hopefully visit your Murray cosmetic dental practice for cleanings, but did you know that making small changes to your diet can improve your oral health?

Most Murray residents are aware that sugar found in candy, cookies, and sodas can harm your teeth, but some Salt Lake City people don’t realize that all carbohydrates can cause cavities. A handful of pretzels or a piece of pumpernickel bread can have the same effect on your teeth as a fudge brownie.

All carbohydrates break down into simple sugars, which are converted into plaque, which can then cause cavities and gum disease. Carbs are naturally sticky and adhere to your teeth. Eating carbs with meals is healthier than eating them as snacks because more saliva is generated at mealtime. Saliva helps prevent food particles from sticking to teeth.

At Salt Lake Dental Care, I continue to see tooth damage caused by sodas and sports drinks. If you choose to drink them, sip them through a straw. By limiting the contact of these drinks on your teeth, you will help preserve your enamel.

Another way Salt Lake City folks can improve their oral health is to get 800mg of calcium a day for men and 1,000mg for women under 50. Calcium helps strengthen your jaw and secure your teeth firmly in the jaw bone.

Diet alone will not prevent cavities and gum disease for Murray folks, however, a few changes in eating habits can help maintain healthy teeth and gums.

My staff and I at Salt Lake Dental Care are accepting new Murray general and cosmetic dental patients in the 84107 zip code area. I encourage you to call 801-938-8855 today to schedule an exam and cleaning.

Salt Lake Dental Care offers a full menu of general and specialty dental services including general dentistry and cosmetic dentistry. For more information, call today to schedule an appointment.

Murray UT Cosmetic Dental Artistry

Cosmetic Dentistry Murray UT Murray UT cosmetic dentistry is part science and part art.

I’m Dr. Clint Blackwood of Salt Lake Dental Care and I enjoy using my extensive dental training and specialized artistic skills to design treatment plans unique to each of my Murray UT cosmetic dental clients.

In order to achieve an attractive, yet natural looking result, I do much more than recommend specific procedures. I consider the shape, alignment, color and condition of the teeth. In order to create a balanced look, the facial shape and coloring is taken into account. The Murray UT general dentistry client’s age, health condition and lifestyle all influence the plan.

At Salt Lake Dental Care, there is no one size fits all treatment plan.

My artistic abilities have been perfected over several years of creating smile transformations for my Murray UT area cosmetic dentistry clients. I am constantly receiving the latest training in new techniques and materials.

Even fairly recent cosmetic dental procedures such as teeth whitening and porcelain veneers have advanced considerably. Dental implants are a truly remarkable solution for our Murray UT dental clients who have lost one or more teeth.

I would love to design a personalized smile makeover for you. When the work has been completed and you are enjoying your new look, it will only be obvious to those who see you all the time. Others will assume you have always been blessed with a naturally beautiful and healthy smile.
