Tooth Replacement For The 21st Century

Sandy tooth implant supported dentures

Not everything was better back in the “good old days.” Take dentures, for instance. Dentures have been around for generations and have certainly improved the lives of thousands of Murray people who have lost many or all of their teeth.

However, Grandpa’s conventional false teeth are not the ideal tooth replacement. Traditional dentures can impede many essential oral functions: chewing, tasting, swallowing, talking, and smiling.

You may know denture wearers who have stopped attending social activities because they are embarrassed by dentures that are far from inconspicuous. Some have even stopped eating their favorite foods because their dentures impair their ability to taste and/or chew.

I have amazing news for Murray residents with missing teeth: Dentures have evolved!

Implant-anchored or implant-supported dentures are far superior than traditional dentures for many patients. So much better, in fact, that there really should be another term for this advanced tooth replacement system – a term that doesn’t include the word “denture.” (If you can think of a good name, let us know.)

There are two types of implant anchored dentures; removable and permanent. No adhesive is necessary for either system. With the permanent type, screw retentions are anchored in the jaw to serve as attachment points for the denture. Permanent implant-supported dentures are very stable. Moreover, they are usually less costly than replacing each missing tooth with an implant. (The cost varies depending on the number of implants required and other factors.)

Screw retentions require enough bone thickness to allow the implant to securely mesh with the existing bone. Unfortunately, some patients who have been missing teeth for a long period of time have experienced bone recession. For patients who lack the necessary amount of bone, mini-implants may be an alternative.

Removable implant anchored dentures have a locator attachment which allows the wearer to snap the appliance in place. Some patients prefer this type because they can remove them at night for cleaning. Countless Murray patients who have traded in their traditional dentures are happy about their new implant supported dentures.

The wonderful advantages of implant-supported dentures include:

Increased comfort
Natural appearance
Normal tooth function
Improved stability
Better bone retention
Denture relines not
necessary
Minimal gum irritation
No denture adhesive required

7 Ways To Fix A Tooth

fix broken tooth Murray

In a perfect world, each of your prized teeth would stay healthy, strong, and brilliantly white throughout your life. The truth is, however, that most Utah men and women will need to restore a tooth at some point.

A tooth can be compromised by dental caries, enamel erosion, a chip or crack, gum disease, or injury. Sometimes old restorations break and need to be replaced or root canals performed decades ago develop an abscess.

Here are 7 different options for repairing a damaged tooth:

Dental Bonding
Bonding, officially called direct composite veneers, is used to repair minor cosmetic issues – small chips, cracks, discoloration, and spaces between teeth. A skilled cosmetic dentist applies moldable tooth-colored composite resin and shapes as desired. The resin is then cured with a special light to harden and adhere tightly to the tooth. Composite bonding is often the most cost-effective option for improving healthy teeth with minor cosmetic issues.

Porcelain Veneers
Porcelain veneers are wafer-thin tooth-shaped fronts that are permanently bonded to your natural teeth. They are used when the underlying tooth is structurally sound and free of dental caries. A beautiful veneer can cover a chip or crack or fix the alignment of a tooth that appears slightly off kilter as compared to surrounding teeth.

Fillings
Modern white fillings are strong and inconspicuous. A minimally invasive filling at Salt Lake Dental Care leaves you with more of nature’s prime dental material — your own enamel and dentin. We can also replace old amalgam fillings with white fillings. This makes your teeth look a lot better every time you open your mouth. Get rid of all that metal!

Inlays and Onlays
A traditional filling is shaped and molded after it is applied to the tooth. Because inlays and onlays are constructed in a dental lab, they are typically called indirect fillings. A less invasive inlay or onlay may be used instead of a traditional filling or, in some cases, a crown. Inlays are applied to just the center of the biting surface of a tooth (not to a cusp or point) and are generally smaller than onlays. An onlay restores one or more cusps of a tooth.

Crowns
A dental crown replaces the entire visible portion of the tooth, restoring appearance, strength, and function. A crown is commonly needed for a tooth that has had a root canal, a tooth with extreme decay, or as the replacement tooth in a dental bridge. Attaching a crown to the abutment is the final step of a tooth implant procedure. Crowns can be made of all metal (such as gold), porcelain-fused-to-metal, all ceramic, or all resin.

Soft Tissue Grafts
Gum recession puts teeth and underlying bone at risk. Soft tissue grafting can cover the exposed root of a tooth to impede further damage. Gum surgery is also handled for cosmetic reasons such reshaping a gumline to eliminate a “gummy” smile.

Dental Implants
What if a tooth has to be extracted because it is beyond saving? For many Salt Lake Dental Care patients, a dental implant anchored into the bone is the best solution. A tooth implant consist of a strong metal post (artificial root), abutment (connecting piece), and beautiful crown. A dental implant had many advantages over a dental bridge. They are stronger, provide virtually natural function, prohibit bone recession, and do not influence the surrounding teeth. For patients with numerous missing teeth, custom implant-anchored dentures can be established in any configuration required.

Murray Tooth Restoration: Dental Implants And Dental Bridges

dental implants Salt Lake CityWhen my Murray patients ask me about tooth restoration, I usually tell them about fixed (or ‘traditional’) dental bridges or tooth implants. A dental bridge is an artificial tooth which replaces a missing tooth. The false tooth (called a ‘pontic’) is fused to porcelain crowns on either side of the missing tooth.

Tooth replacement has been a highly requested procedure at my Murray dental practice. Patients from the Taylorsville area and Draper area have expressed concern about tooth replacement for many years. Most of my questions in the Salt Lake City area have to do with the strength and durability of the tooth replacement.

Dental implants are also popular in Salt Lake City. A dental implant consists of a titanium post surgically inserted into the jaw bone to replace the root of the missing tooth. The post integrates with the bone to provide a stable foundation for the replacement tooth.

After the post has bonded with the bone (it usually takes three to six months), a smaller post is attached which extends above the gum line. The artificial tooth (crown) is then attached. The entire process takes several months, but consistently yields terrific results for Murray tooth restoration patients.

Both Utah smile restoration options preserve or restore facial contour and allow you to talk and eat normally. Tooth replacements prevent adjoining teeth from gradually shifting and can help correct bite problems, too.

Tooth implants and dental bridges can replace one or more missing teeth. Many Salt Lake City area dental patients have been treated successfully with these tooth restoration alternatives.

Call Salt Lake Dental Care and ask to schedule an evaluation for Utah tooth restoration with Dr. Clint Blackwood. You can schedule your tooth restoration by calling us at 801-938-8855.
