5 Cavity Basics For Salt Lake City

Salt Lake City Cosmetic Dentist

Some of the most popular dental topics discussed in Sandy and Murray relate to cosmetic dentistry, such as teeth whitening, veneers, and dental implants. However, the desire to avoid cavities is still the main reason Taylorsville and Draper residents visit their dentists, so today the Murray dental blog is going to highlight the 5 things you need to know about cavities.

1. Cavities can also be called caries or tooth decay. When a tooth is permanently damaged in the hard surface, tiny openings occur. These little holes are cavities.

2. Factors that contribute to tooth decay are:

Frequent eating
Consuming sugary beverages
Oral bacteria
Poor dental hygiene

3. Cavities may get so bad that you will see pits or holes in your teeth, but symptoms may be more subtle, such as sensitivity, pain when biting, or a toothache. If you experience any of these symptoms, you should call your Sandy, Taylorsville, or Draper dentist today for an appointment.

4. Cavities are more common among children, but that doesn’t mean adults don’t have to take precautions.

5. Avoiding cavities is simple. Be sure to brush twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste, floss daily, eat right and avoid snacking, and have regular visits with your dentist.

If you are in the market for quality dental care in the Murray area, give Salt Lake Dental Care a call. We have been treating dental patients in and around Salt Lake City since 2005. We can also answer any questions you have about cosmetic dentistry procedures such as gum contouring and smile makeovers.

Avoid Sports Dental Emergencies: Protect Those Teeth!

sports dentistry Murray

It is estimated that over 5 million teeth are knocked out yearly and a significant portion of these dental traumas occur on the playing field or court. Each dislodged tooth requires several trips to the dentist and hundreds of dollars in restoration expenses. Not to mention pain!

I’m Dr. Clint Blackwood of Salt Lake Dental Care and I want to raise awareness of the importance of athletic mouth protection. I advise my patients to think of mouthguards as an important part of their protective gear. Most Murray parents require their children to wear helmets when biking and shinguards while playing soccer. I encourage parents to emphasize the importance of mouth protection from your child’s very first 5 year-old T-ball game. And we all need to practice what we preach.

You are probably aware of the main types of mouthguards: ready-to-wear, boil and bite, and custom-fitted. The stock mouth protectors are pre-formed but are definitely not one-size-fits all and probably provide the least amount of protection. (Though they are better than nothing.)

You can find boil and bite mouth protectors at Murray sporting goods stores. They are to be softened in water and then formed to the mouth (follow the manufacturer’s instructions).

Some Murray dentists offer custom sports mouthguards that provide the highest level of protection and comfort. Mouth protectors that are comfortable are more likely to be worn by kids who complain about wearing a mouthguard. Ask your dentist about custom mouthguards.

Mouth protection is extremely vital for Murray patients with braces or fixed bridge work. Some Murray orthodontists recommend mouth protectors for lower teeth as well.

If you or your child has a sports-related dental emergency, call my Murray office immediately at 801-938-8855. I will do everything in my power to save the tooth but every second counts. Make sure you save all pieces of the tooth and bring them with you.

Energy Drink Warning For Taylorsville

Taylorsville Smile Redesign Hello. I’m Dr. Clint Blackwood.

Welcome to my Taylorsville dental blog. Today’s topic is energy drinks and the damage they can cause to your teeth. I am seeing more and more Taylorsville teens and adults with tooth enamel erosion caused by frequent consumption of sport drinks.

Most of these Taylorsville dentistry patients take good care of their teeth, brush and floss, and come into Salt Lake Dental Care for a twice-yearly exam and deep cleaning. But guess what? If you drink energy drinks regularly, your enamel can erode even if you practice immaculate oral hygiene.

Energy drinks like Red Bull, Rock Star, and Monster are a cocktail of powerful acids and other enamel-eroding substances. Most of them contain citric acid, fruit juices, loads of sugar, and a potent chemical that gives them their bright fluorescent color.

Perhaps, like myself, you have often noticed young people walking out of Taylorsville convenience stores swigging 32-ounce energy drinks. I am concerned that Taylorsville teens do not understand the serious dental consequences of frequent acid baths.

The following is from ABC Sports:

“Sports drinks are increasingly damaging the teeth of professional and recreational athletes, one of Australia’s top sports dentists has warned. Dr. Brett Dorney says he has witnessed a huge increase in dental erosion since the Sidney Olympics, when he was the event’s deputy director of dental services.”

Here is an excerpt from a recent CNN Story:

“Researchers at the University of Iowa’s College of Dentistry found the energy drinks and sports drinks eroded the enamel more than soda and fruit juices.”

I need to add the caveat that soda and fruit juices also contain acids that can damage teeth.

If your teeth have enamel erosion, whatever the cause, we can restore your smile with advanced cosmetic dentistry. Crowns, porcelain veneers, inlays and onlays can correct both structural and cosmetic problems.

Our phone number is 801-938-8855. If you are interested in re-designing your smile, come in for an exam and consultation. With cutting-edge cosmetic dentistry, we can repair acid-damaged teeth and dramatically increase your face value.

Saliva And Murray’s Dental Health

Saliva And Murray

Hi. I’m Dr. Clint Blackwood. Welcome to my Murray dental blog. Today we’ll be looking at the complexity and importance of your saliva. Though most people in the Sandy, Taylorsville, or Draper areas may think it’s gross, saliva is essential to dental health as well as digestion.

Saliva is mostly water, but a small portion of it is made up of enzymes, antibacterial substances, mucus, and minerals. The pH balance of the mouth is maintained by saliva, and pH balance is a key factor in the development of cavities and other forms of tooth decay.

The minerals in saliva help to maintain the enamel surface of the teeth. Immunoproteins in saliva inhibit the overgrowth of microbes in the mouth, thereby protecting the gums from gingivitis.

Now that Salt Lake City residents know how important saliva is to dental health, I’m sure you can see why ample salivary flow should concern you. For most of my Murray patients, everyday chewing is enough to stimulate salivary glands to release saliva. However, dry mouth, also known as xerostomia, is an ailment that should be dealt with quickly before oral health complications occur.

If you are in the Sandy, Taylorsville, or Draper area and are looking for quality dental care, please contact my office today at 801-938-8855. We have been providing general and cosmetic dentistry in Murray since 2005.

Our high-quality staff would be happy to talk to you about wisdom teeth removal, Invisalign, sedation dentistry, porcelain veneers, and the other services we provide to our valued patients.

Keep Your Teeth Safe In Murray

Keep Your Teeth Safe, Murray

Hopefully you are one of many health-conscious Murray residents who are finding ways to get outside or to the gym and get moving. There has been an explosion in the variety of activities offered by personal trainers, all-purpose Murray gyms, specialty facilities, and Utah recreation departments in recent years.

With all these exciting ways to exercise becoming commonplace, people in the Sandy, Taylorsville, and Draper areas may not be aware of the tooth risks associated with them.

I’m Dr. Clint Blackwood, a concerned Murray dentist and fitness enthusiast, and I want to talk to you today about mouth protectors.

You might think that mouth protectors are only for ultimate fighters and football players, but actually mouth guards can and should be used during any activity where a blow to the face is possible.

This includes many common sports such as pick-up basketball games, and volleyball, and bicycling. When you have a properly fitted mouth protector, you can prevent broken or lost teeth as well as lip, tongue, and jaw injuries.

Mouth protectors come in three main types: stock, boil and bite, and custom-fitted. The stock mouth protectors are pre-formed and ready to wear. Unfortunately, they rarely fit well. You can find boil and bite mouth protectors at sporting goods stores in the Salt Lake City area. They are to be softened in water and then formed to your mouth (make sure you follow the manufacturer’s instructions). Custom-fitted mouth protectors can be made by your Murray dentist to make sure you have a perfect fit.

The soft tissues that line your cheeks and lips are especially susceptible to injury when you have braces or fixed bridge work, not to mention the damage that can be caused to the orthodontic appliances themselves. For these reasons, a mouth protector is extremely important for Salt Lake City patients undergoing these treatments. Your Murray orthodontist may even suggest a mouth protector for your lower teeth as well.

If you have questions about sports dentistry in Murray or any other dental issues, please contact my office and schedule an appointment. I look forward to meeting you.

Is Sedation Dentistry Safe For Murray Smiles?

Affordable Murray Dentistry Sedation When I discuss sedation dentistry with new Salt Lake City cosmetic dentistry patients, I encounter many misconceptions. The purpose of today’s Salt Lake Dental Care dentistry article is to debunk some of the most common myths about dental sedation.

Myth #1: With Sedation Dentistry, You Are Completely Unconscious

Some nervous Murray dental patients are not only afraid of receiving treatment; they also fear the thought of not being in control. At Salt Lake Dental Care, we offer different levels of sedation, but none of the sedation options put you completely to sleep. With oral sedation you are relaxed but not totally knocked out. When we need to ask a dental sedation patient a question during the treatment, the patient is able to hear, understand, and respond.

Myth #2: Taylorsville Dental Sedation Should Only Be Used For Extensive Dental Treatment

Salt Lake City anxiety-free dentistry is completely safe. Many nervous sedation dentistry patients request sedation for routine exams and procedures.

Myth #3: Most Utah Dental Insurance Companies Do Not Cover Sleep Dentistry

Some Utah dental insurers do cover sedation. Check with your insurer for details about your Utah dental insurance benefits.

Myth #4: Murray Sleep Dentistry Is Still Experimental

Salt Lake City cosmetic dentists have been safely providing sedation for many years. Salt Lake Dental Care meets all the requirements advised by the American Dental Association. Millions of Americans and thousands of Utah dental patients have safely received sedation for dental treatment.

For more information about anxiety-free dentistry, contact Salt Lake Dental Care at or 801-938-8855 today to schedule a sedation consultation.

Why Do Murray Dentists Like Potatoes?

Murray teeth bleaching best price

The reason dentists like potatoes is because they are so “filling!” Ba-dum ching.

Lame joke, I know. But seriously, the wiser our patients in Draper and Sandy are about what they eat, the easier it will be to care for their dear old teeth.

It doesn’t have to be potatoes, but the mouth does request that we take a good look at what can be damaging and upsetting it.

The Sugar Problem
Sugars get converted by bacteria in the mouth to acids, which attack enamel on teeth and get the decay process started for Draper people of all ages. Fruits have a high water content which can dilute the effects of the sugars they contain and get the saliva flowing, so they aren’t really no-nos. It’s the chocolate bars, hard candies, cookies, cakes, and pies that you should steer clear of.

Acidic Food Coupling
Oranges, tomatoes, lemons, and the like should be eaten as part of a meal to minimize their acidic effects. Sandy folks are wise to eat a variety of healthy foods such as cheeses, chicken and other meats, nuts, and milk. The calcium and phosphorus in these foods will support tooth remineralization.

Timing of Meals
The more often you eat, the more often your teeth are subject to the decay process. This can be tempered by choosing healthy snacks. And keep in mind, the later at night you eat the more likely you are not only to eat unhealthy foods, but to skip oral hygiene altogether.

I hope this blog assists in keeping you on the path to a healthy mouth and gives you something to think about if you’re interested in oral health in Salt Lake City or Murray, Utah.
